Project Objectives

The chosen energy monitoring system will monitor the electricity used at a machine level in real time. This system will be installed across our entire machining fleet, which will directly provide an accurate data picture of energy spent in their operations. This bottom-up approach to energy monitoring will provide accurate data to exploit energy-saving opportunities within our facility. The installed meters will also log the data and act as a basis for a data analysis system. This data will be a key decision-making aid for the leadership team. It will further allow the team to make a direct correlation between the energy used in producing a part and the CO2 generated by the part.

Impact and Benefits

  • Automated energy monitoring system in place
  • 40% reduction in electricity usage using Smart power machines
  • Uncover operational energy saving opportunities in real time
  • Pinpoint sources of energy waste, e.g. energy used when machines are idle
  • Inform capital purchases of new machinery, e.g. comparing the energy cost of running new machinery versus retrofitting existing machinery to improve energy efficiency
  • Obtain accurate job energy overhead costs. This will directly improve job quoting accuracy.

Our company's environmental strategy is focused on reducing energy usage and carbon emissions in alignment with industry-standard sustainability goals. At the core of this strategy is monitoring energy usage, which has both a sustainable and monetary impact on operations at Thormac.
