Communicating sustainability meaningfully is a challenge, one which often requires businesses to strike a careful balance between meaningful action and messaging that risks coming across as virtue signaling or misleading.
The Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition (ECGT) Directive aims to foster transparent sustainability communication by banning generic environmental claims (such as "eco-friendly" or "green") that lack proven excellence. It introduces stricter regulations for sustainability labels and enhances consumer protection against unfair practices like "Greenwashing". While the Directive entered into force at the EU level in early 2024, Member States were required to adopt and publish the necessary transposing legislation by 27 March 2026, with the measures becoming legally effective across the EU on 27 September 2026.
Once implemented, companies across Ireland will be required to ensure that all environmental claims, from marketing statements to product labelling, are substantiated, verifiable, and fully compliant with the new EU standards. Businesses that fail to comply will face regulatory scrutiny, reputational risk, and potential penalties.
This webinar will feature a panel of experts discussing the steps for developing strategies for responsible & transparent sustainability communications.
