What problem are you solving and what is innovative about your approach?

Stokes Microfluidic is a spin-out company from the University of Limerick. We have developed technology that allows for the development of ultra-small form factor microfluidic devices, including micro-pumps, flow meters and latching valves. These technologies outperform all current state-of-the-art with unravelled performance.

Current microfluidic technologies are not meeting the advanced technical requirements of the pharmaceutical, biomedical and aerospace industries; stifling innovation and product development. Stokes Microfluidics have developed technology that directly addresses this critical issue, providing innovative, reliable high performance microfluidic pumps and fluidic control systems for high-value products.

How is this idea commercially attractive?

Microfluidic technology is now expanding into high-value products, consequently producing a growing and urgent demand for innovative solutions. The central component in any microfluidic platform is the pumping and control mechanism. However, existing products which are based on traditional engineering methods are not suitable for these new applications – consequently stifling innovation and development.

Stokes Microfluidics has brought significant innovation to the development of a pump and control product line which is superior to any microfluidic device on the market – outperforming competitors in all key metrics. This is achieved with unique designs and utilises a powerful patented direct drive electromagnetic system integrated with a magnetic-fluidic coupler enclosed in a precision housing unit.

What do you hope to achieve by participating in Big Ideas?

Our participation in Big Ideas 2020 allows Stokes Microfluidics a platform to demonstrate our commercial attractiveness to potential investor and our key technologies to a wider commercial audience.
