Arama - revolutionsing TV outside broadcasts

What problem are you solving and what is innovative about your approach?

We understand live TV intimately - our CEO, Donal Scannell, has worked on everything from The Late Late Show to IRFU Rugby Specials to U2 tours. That has allowed us to solve one of the longest running problems the industry faces. Television outside broadcasts are expensive and how they are produced hasn’t changed fundamentally since 1948 - you still have a big truck and a large crew that needs to be moved from place to place. This is a big problem for broadcasters. Expensive outside broadcasts mean less of them and in a rapidly changing media landscape that means more of people’s attention being grabbed by the app-based competition and their lower production costs. Our first vertical is soccer - only one third of professional games are televised yet soccer accounts for 50% of the global TV sports market. Look at England’s Women’s National League - only 30 of the 200 games are televised. Arama could televise all 200 for the same budget as is currently being spent on 30. We use AI and Computer Vision to give humans superpowers. Using Arama, a crew of 3 can achieve what currently takes 33 people.

How is this idea commercially attractive?

The TV industry traditionally looks to hardware for solutions, but Arama is turning everything on its head using software, specifically AI and Video Processing. The TV industry loves what we’re doing - RTÉ and Premier Sports are on board as trial partners and we’re in talks with Europe’s biggest broadcasters. Arama slashes the costs of TV outside broadcasts - we can do for €5k what currently costs €40k. The TV industry loves our idea - we’ve got RTÉ and Premier Sports as trial partners and we’re in talks with most of the major European sports broadcasters.

What do you hope to achieve by participating in Big Ideas?

Big Ideas will be our launch platform - we haven’t been telling the outside world about Arama until now and the timing is perfect as we’re raising a round of seed funding.
