€3.5m investment plan for Burnside Eurocyl supported by Enterprise Ireland

Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Richard Bruton TD, today [Tuesday 17th September 2013] announced the creation of 25 new jobs and a €3.5m expansion plan at Carlow company Burnside Eurocyl Ltd. This investment is supported by the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation through Enterprise Ireland. A number of the new jobs have been filled and the remainder will be filled over the next 18 months, bringing total employment at Burnside to 170.

Burnside Eurocyl is a member of the Burnside group and is a family owned company.  It is one of Europe’s largest hydraulic cylinder manufacturers and supplies original equipment manufacturers on a Just-in-Time basis. Clients include household names like Volvo and JCB, as well as industry stalwarts Komatsu, Doosan Bobcat and the Wirtgen Group among others. The €3.5m investment will allow Burnside Eurocyl to expand its manufacturing facilities, upgrade R&D facilities, and train employees in Lean manufacturing techniques.

Speaking during a visit to Burnside Eurocyl, Minister Bruton said:
“At the centre of the Government’s plans for jobs and growth is creating a powerful engine of Irish exporting businesses. Throughout the country we have strong, family-owned manufacturing and engineering companies like Burnside, creating products and services to the highest standards for international markets. Companies like these can be the engine of Irish recovery, and through the Action Plan for Jobs we have put in place a range of measures to provide better supports for them, such as the Development Capital Scheme and the Foreign Earnings Deduction.

“I am delighted to be here for this very welcome announcement by Burnside Eurocyl that it is creating 25 jobs, I congratulate them on their achievement and wish them every success for the future”.

Tom and Anthony Byrne, Joint Managing Directors of Burnside Eurocyl Ltd added: “We are committed to growing the business in Carlow and this investment will enable us to expand our customer base over a wider geographic area and also into new market sectors. A major factor in the continuing success of Burnside Eurocyl is our committed and experienced workforce - most of whom have been with us for many years. The investment will also allow us to expand our employee training programme and further develop our Lean manufacturing systems, not only creating 25 new jobs in Carlow but also securing the jobs of our existing employees”.

“The continued support from Enterprise Ireland, together with this investment, gives us the platform to grow the business and expand our sales by 30% over the next three years”.

Burnside Eurocyl is a member of the Burnside group of companies which was founded by the Byrne family in 1974. The group operates four cylinder production plants in County Carlow employing a workforce of almost 600 people. Burnside Eurocyl was set up by Anthony & Tom Byrne in 1998 and operates from a purpose-built 80,000 sq ft facility in Carlow town, employing 155 highly trained staff.

The expansion plan will enable Burnside Eurocyl to increase its export business by 10% per year. Currently 95% of all sales are exported to 16 countries across mainland Europe, USA and Canada and have more recently commenced business in China and Russia.
