SuperValu supports job creation with launch of Enterprise Ireland SuperValu Supplier Development Programme
22nd November, 2012 – Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Simon Coveney TD has announced the eleven companies that will participate in the Enterprise Ireland SuperValu Supplier Development Programme. The programme now in its sixth year aims to assist emerging Irish food companies to achieve retail listings with supermarkets. To date, previous participants have benefited from €15 million in direct sales from SuperValu and created hundreds of jobs.
Developed by Enterprise Ireland in conjunction with SuperValu, and assisted by Bord Bia and Teagasc, the Programme delivers support for small or emerging food companies to achieve the product quality, service standards and technical innovation necessary to reach supermarket shelves.
Now in its sixth year, eleven companies have signed up to take part in the six-month long programme, which will consist of both workshops delivered by SuperValu and industry experts and one-on-one mentoring. This year’s participants consist of Kilbeg Dairies, Clotilde’s Fruit Compote, Drombeg Spirits, Biddy Gonzales, Simplee, Jack Molloys, Flatbread Company, Pure Brazen, Kavanagh’s Fine Foods, Bombay Pantry and Pie Irish.
Launching the programme, Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Simon Coveney TD, said: The market know-how of a company such as SuperValu is a huge benefit to food producers seeking to reach more consumers and to grow their businesses in line with Food Harvest 2020. A comprehensive retail programme such as this equips participants with skills required to secure and maintain a listing and so build a high profile route to market for their products.“

In 2011 the total purchases of Irish goods and services made by SuperValu, was worth over €1.6bn to the Irish economy, serving to both create and protect almost 30,000 Irish jobs in the farm, food and retail sector.

Overview of Enterprise Ireland SuperValu Supplier Development Programme participants
- Clotilde’s Fruit Compote – Mitchelstown Co. Cork
The company was set up by Pat Landers and Clotilde Fitzgibbon. They produce a fruit compote (a blend of cooked fruits). These include apple blended with either raspberry, strawberry, blackberry or pear. The range is free of sugar and preservatives and is a healthy accompaniment to cereals yogurts and desserts or as a stand-alone snack.
- Drombeg Spirits / West Cork Distillers – Union Hall, Co. Cork
Drombeg was formed in March 2010 by John O’Connell and manufactures and sells a range of "savoury" brown spirit liqueurs (Drombeg & Lough Hyne). WCD is a technology focused-market driven company which has developed its own unique and proprietary maturation technology for the manufacture of brown spirits.
- Biddy Gonzales - Dungarvan, Co. Waterford
Biddy Gonzales is a start-up Mexican food venture founded by sisters, Rioghnach and Caoimhe Nic Craith. There is a huge trend towards Mexican food in Ireland with several Mexican restaurants now open in Dublin and other cities in the past year. Biddy Gonzales is poised to capitalise on the consumer's desire for authentic, high quality, Mexican cuisine. The company has developed a line of chilled convenience food for ‘on the go’ people, that is delicious, fresh, authentic and healthy. The range includes Mexican Ready meals (chicken, beef and vegetable), Fiesta BBQ Sauce, Zesty Coriander and Lime Salad Dressing and BBQ Pork Spare ribs.
- Kilbeg Dairies- Co. Meath
Kilbeg was established in 2005 by Kieran and Jane Cassidy. They produce a range of high quality desserts including fat free quark cheese, fromage frais natural yoghurt, sour cream, crème fraiche and mascarpone cheese (all in 200 g tubs – cases of 6). Their USP is the fat free proposition. They are the only producer of the full range to the retail and food service sector.
- Simplee – Castlemartyr , Co. Cork
Established in 2011 by Edel Cooney, Simplee is an artisan Irish seasoning company. It provides a natural range of flavoured salts (fresh herb sea salt, chilli sea salt, sea salt, whole black peppercorns, garlic sea salt, lemon pepper, sweet & smoky sea salt, all-purpose salt free). Simplee ties in with the “cook from scratch” concept whereby people are keen to cook for themselves and like to buy products which allow them to be creative in the kitchen. Simplee can be cross merchandised with fresh meat and sea food products.
- Jack Molloys – Barrack Street, Co. Waterford
Jack Molloys is a fourth generation butchers, originally established in 1932. The company has developed a range of cooked bacon and rib products and has patented a unique cooking and cure process for bacon ribs.
- Bombay Pantry – Kilcoole, Co. Wicklow
Bombay Pantry is a leading producer of Indian food in Ireland. It supplies the retail and food service markets and has seven directly owned Bombay Pantry shops. The company was established in 1997 by John Sheehan. It is 100% Irish owned. All food is cooked from scratch and the brand is known for quality, consistency and authenticity. The retail proposition is a range of freshly chilled meals of which there are 4 chicken options (tikka masala, new delhi, shimla and vindaloo) a beef curry, a vegetarian curry, 2 rice options and starters (vegetable bhajias). A range of freshly chilled sauces complements the range and gives customers the option of preparing the meal in some part themselves. 5 different sauces in 2 sizes are on offer. The target market for this range is nationwide customers who are looking for a superior quality product at a reasonable price point.
- Flatbread Company – Clara, Co. Offaly
The Flat Bread Company was set up by brothers Kieran and Sean Walsh in 2008. Both brothers have backgrounds in the food sector; Kieran worked at the Kerry Group for ten years and Sean had been running an artisan bakery in Limerick. It specialises in baking premium quality flat breads since 2009, making fresh tortilla and pizza bases. The company has a dedicated flat bread operation which specialises in flat breads, using best quality ingredients together with traditional methods and operates a unique dough baking system allowing a consistent and quality product to be achieved. They have developed fresh flour tortilla in packs of 6 and 8 for retail. Their USP is that they are the only fresh baker of wraps in Ireland currently.
- Pure Brazen - Terenure, Co. Dublin
Pure Brazen was established in 2011 by Daragh Whelan and David Lombard. Both promoters are from a financial background with a passion for cooking. They produce 100% natural food stocks in a 450ml pouch ideal for home based cooking which are free from additives, preservatives and colourants. Also GM and gluten free. In addition the company is developing a range of stock minis (reduced stock/cube).
- Bartys/Kavanaghs Fine Foods – Ballincollig, Co. Cork
Kavanaghs Fine Foods was established in 2009. Their products include batter sausage, batter burger, battered potato pie and cheese and potato pie.
- Pie Irish – Tralee, Co. Kerry
Pie Irish was set up in 2011 by Michelle Moran (qualified chef and caterer.) Michelle researched the Pie Minister business model and saw the potential for an Irish-produced gourmet pie range. The company specialises in a range of deep filled savoury pastry pies. Capitalising on the call to ‘Buy Irish’, Pie Irish source locally produced and home grown as much as possible. They also have developed a range of pizzas (with a modern twist.)
