    Published on Jul 20, 2010
Waratek, inventor of Redundant Array of Inexpensive Servers (RAIS) technology, will this year begin trialling the industry's first RAIS computing systems with early adopter customers in the UK and Ireland. RAIS technology is the result of nearly a decade of research and development into an entirely new classification of high performance computing system; modelled on RAID technology, RAIS clusters (called RAIS arrays) perform in a functionally identical manner to RAID arrays by virtualizing a cluster of independent servers in striping, mirroring, and parity configurations (RAIS Levels 0, 1, 5, and 1+0) for various arrangements of performance, capability, and fault-tolerance. With "no known technology addressing scale-out architectures in the same way as RAIS", IDC writes that Waratek's RAIS technology is "an entirely new paradigm in the market, one that has been sought after by many firms". In 2008, Waratek established its international headquarters in Dublin, Ireland, after securing the backing of high profile venture capital group Mangrove Capital Partners of Luxembourg, and in 2011 will begin rolling out RAIS certified applications and systems to the global IT market.

Facilitating Drug Delivery to the Brain - Big Ideas 2010 - Enterprise Irelandby EnterpriseIrelandTV605 views
    -HZBcI3ka0M
    Published on Nov 09, 2010
Getting therapeutic drugs into the human brain is not easy. It's a well protected structure, not only because it is encased in bone, but also because blood vessels that serve the brain are lined by tightly- packed cells that make up the 'blood-brain barrier'. That security is there to protect brain tissue from dangerous pathogens and foreign molecules, but it's also a barrier to the entry of therapeutic agents. However, there could be a way to sneak drugs past those barriers by opening them transiently, explains Dr Matthew Campbell from Trinity College Dublin. He's part of a team pioneering an approach that uses specifically designed small interfering RNA to suppress production of a protein called claudin-5, a key component of the barrier that stops drugs moving across from the bloodstream. Injecting siRNA systemically has been shown to improve the permeability of blood cells around brain tumours called gliobastomas in pre-clinical models. "Given the life-threatening nature of this sort of condition, systemic administration of siRNA targeting claudin-5 to allow periodic drug access to tumours would be ethically justifiable," says Dr Campbell. The approach could also be used in the treatment of traumatic brain injury, where suppressing claudin with siRNA could open the blood-brain barrier and encourage the movement of water away from the injury site, thereby reducing the potentially lethal effects of swelling, he added. In a related project, the team has also developed an inducible system to suppress claudin-5 and open the barriers in blood vessels serving the retina. That offers options to treat degenerative eye diseases with systemic drugs rather than repeated injections into the eye.

Cancer is a complex disease but looking for useful 'biomarkers' in samples from individual patients can ultimately help tailor and improve their treatment. Manually screening slides of tissue sections for such markers is time - consuming and open to variability, but computational methods can help to quantify markers quickly in large numbers of samples, explains William Gallagher, Chief Scientific Officer of OncoMark Ltd. and associate professor of cancer biology at UCD. He and his research team have developed an imageanalysis platform -- IHC-Mark -- that can recognise the features of tumour cells and quantify them in highthroughput screening of samples. The computational approach grew out of a need in Gallagher's research team at OncoMark and the Conway Institute: "We were using tissue micro-array technology where we put hundreds of clinical specimens from cancer patients on to one pathology slide, and you would have a problem analysing that manually." So they developed the system to analyse samples and intelligently quantify markers, and the resulting technology has now been benchmarked against pathologist testing for multiple markers in tissue samples from breast, lung, bladder, melanoma and ovarian cancer patients.

Business Process Management Software (BPM) is big business, worth $3 billion a year, according to Gartner. Despite this, and the emergence of a market for Automated Business Process Discovery (ABPD) software, there are no tools that automatically discover enduser processes. Yet, this is where most staff conduct business —working with spreadsheets and other applications in uncontrolled and unmapped processes. Which is why a team at Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) have developed a way to improve the visibility of business processes that allows managers to track activities to help increase productivity and cost effectiveness. The technology focuses on spreadsheets. Why target spreadsheets? "Spreadsheets are corporate IT glue, they are used for critical business flows and to fill gaps between systems. So, spreadsheet activity can tell you a lot about how people conduct business and interact with systems" explains Dr Rónán Mac Ruairí, a lecturer and researcher at DkIT. Seeing room for improvement, the team developed Luminous, a technology to allow companies to get a detailed and continuous view of spreadsheet usage. "It's all about visibility - if you can't see a process you can't manage it," says Dr Mac Ruairí. "The system works through a series of software 'sensors' deployed over a network, or on individual workstations, to build up a map of how resources are being used." "Luminous has been undergoing live trials with several companies and has already highlighted areas where processes could be improved and productivity gains made. The technology is of particular use when assessing resource usage before buying or upgrading enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, and can improve return on investment" he adds.

    Published on Nov 09, 2010
The volume of data carried in optical communication networks is increasing due to the increased use of video applications and the surge in cloud computing. Datacentres have huge volumes of data flowing internally and externally in fibres. Fibre to the home is imminent in several countries. Metropolitan areas and backbone already use fibre but need to accommodate more data in each fibre. There is a clear need to put more data through each fibre (i.e. improving its spectral efficiency) rather than installing more fibre. Methods proposed include advanced modulation techniques, multiple wavelengths in each fibre and dynamic reconfiguration of the network using tunable lasers to assign capacity where most needed. Researchers from the Radio and Optical Communications Laboratory in DCU under the guidance of Prof. Liam Barry and Dr. Philip Perry have developed a unique capability to switch and re-route spectrally efficient data paths carrying multiple streams of 10 Gbps data in less than 100 nanoseconds. Pilot Photonics, a proposed spin-out from this group, will produce optical transceiver products that will enable the development of fast switching, high capacity, low energy nodes that will form the fabric of next generation fibre optic communication.

From the SME to the large multinational, electricity spend ranges from €200,000 to €5 million with no cost reduction in sight. Monitoring that energy consumption is of increasing concern to companies, according to John Feighan. He is working on Veutility, a technology being spin-out from University College Dublin, that offers smart solutions to keeping track of who consumes what and where. "Traditionally, companies have used hard-wired meters to measure their consumption. More recently smart meters that can potentially connect via a network to a single reporting or monitoring source have been used," explains Feighan.

We often take the water that comes out of the tap for granted -- until something goes wrong with it. Contamination of water supplies can have dire and costly consequences for human health and industry, and can in some cases even affect entire cities or regions. That's why teams at NUI Maynooth and other universities are developing suites of wireless watermonitoring sensors and software that can be deployed in any river, marine or industry situation to police water quality around the clock. Being able to monitor pollutant levels remotely has many advantages, according to Pat O'Leary, CEO of Faaltech, which is working with NUIM to develop a suite of wireless sensors to monitor heavy metals, nitrates, nitrites and other water pollutants.

As a nation, we have a long and proud history of punching above our weight. We’ve shown the world how a small country can be a leader on the global stage. And now we have the chance to do so again, but this opportunity has far reaching consequences for Ireland and the entire planet. There are few places on earth better located to harness the power of the wind. Our island’s unique position on the edge of the Atlantic might bring some inclement weather, but it surrounds us with a valuable natural resource. An astonishing 85% of our country’s energy needs are imported from abroad, either through fossil fuels or electricity directly from the UK grid. We’re at the mercy of volatile global market prices. Harnessing wind energy – along with other renewable resources – could end that reliance, restoring our energy independence and showing the world how to live without fossil fuels. #eightyfive15

    Published on Feb 22, 2013
Government builds on 2012 Plan with highly ambitious 'Disruptive Reforms', in partnership with industry, to make major impact on job-creation in 2013 The Taoiseach, the Tánaiste and the Jobs Minister Richard Bruton published Action Plan for Jobs 2013, the next step in the Government's plan to rebuild the economy and accelerate the transition to a sustainable, jobs-rich economy based on enterprise, innovation and exports. The Plan, which contains 333 actions to be implemented in 2013 by 16 Government Departments and 46 agencies, will build on the progress made in 2012 and continue to improve supports for job-creating businesses and remove the barriers to employment-creation across the economy. These actions are additional to the 249 actions already implemented under Action Plan 2012, which have helped support net growth of almost 12,000 in private sector employment in the past year. In the three years to March 2011 a net 250,000 jobs were lost in the private sector. http://www.merrionstreet.ie/index.php/2013/02/action-plan-for-jobs-2013-launched/?cat=3

800 jobs and 400 construction jobs to be created by Kerry Group in Government Supported Investmentby MerrionStreetNews887 views
    DEVODnEljDU
    Published on Oct 09, 2012
Kerry Group today announced the establishment of an industry-leading global technology and innovation centre in Ireland. The €100m investment, which will create 800 jobs, as well as 400 immediate construction jobs, will be part-funded by the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation through Enterprise Ireland. The new flagship global technology and customer innovation centre will serve as a key focal point for Kerry's customer engagement activities providing strategic customers with access to the Group's complete breadth and depth of technologies, scientific research, innovation and applications expertise across food, beverage and pharmaceutical markets. Welcoming the announcement, Jobs Minister Richard Bruton said: Central to the Government's plans for jobs and growth is creating a powerful engine of indigenous enterprise. We must not only continue to deepen and develop the impact of the very important multinational sector, but also crucially support Irish companies who are seeking to expand their presence in export markets and become world-leaders in their field. I commend Enterprise Ireland on their excellent work on this project. This is the largest single investment in food innovation ever by a company in Ireland, and puts Ireland firmly at the forefront of global food innovation. The fact that this is the work of an Irish company will help raise the ambitions of other Irish companies to become world-leaders in their own fields. Through implementation of the Action Plan for Jobs I am determined to continue improving supports to Irish enterprises so that we can see more businesses aiming high and creating the jobs we need. Agriculture Minister, Simon Coveney said: Today is a phenomenal announcement and is perhaps the most significant investment ever in the Irish Agri Food industry. It is the proof that the agri food sector can be central to rebuilding the Irish economy. This investment is a statement of confidence in the Irish economy and in the quality of Irish food science graduates to deliver food innovation in the most modern facility of its type on the planet. The agri food and food innovation sector will continue to provide positivity and optimism in the Irish economy. The leadership that Kerry have shown with this project is testament to their commitment to this country Frank Ryan, CEO of Enterprise Ireland, added: This centre will be one of the world's most advanced food innovation facilities. It will underpin Ireland's world-wide reputation in food innovation and secure our standing as a world leader in the food industry.

We produce enough beef each year to feed 30 million Europeans. 1 out of every 5 burgers served in McDonalds in Europe is Irish beef. Find out more in this 3 minute overview. Ireland by the Numbers (Script) Ireland means business for the world 960 foreign companies - employing 138,000 workers - cutting edge - technology - research - IT hardware and - software - pharmaceuticals - medical devices Home to some of the world s leading companies: 8 of the top 10 pharmaceutical companies 15 of the top 25 in medical devices More than 50% of the world s leading financial services firms 8 of the top 10 technology companies. In fact the total US investment into Ireland is greater than into: - Brazil - Russia - India - and China - COMBINED. More food for thought ? - Ireland produces enough beef each year for 30 m Europeans - In fact we re the largest exporter of beef in Europe and the fourth largest in the world - One out of five burgers served in McDonalds across Europe is Irish beef Speaking of cows: - Ireland exports 80% of its dairy production - We make 15% of the world s infant formula We re taking care of people in other ways: - 10 of the world s top-selling prescription drugs are made in Ireland Ireland is a giant in medical technology More than 24,000 people are employed by 160 medical technology companies in Ireland and 80 of these companies are INDIGENOUS. For every 100 jobs created in life sciences manufacturing, an additional 100 jobs are created in supporting services. 6.9 bn in exports of medical devices 2nd largest exporter of medical devices in Europe after Germany And one Sligo-based medical devices firm makes enough tubing to circle the globe. Every year. Twice. Exports like these will lead Ireland back to growth. In fact, Irish companies own more stock invesments overseas (ODI) than foreign companies make into Ireland. ( 189.7bn v 169.3bn) Which shouldn't really surprise you. But here are some other things that might: Half of the world's fleet of leased aircraft is managed from Ireland. We employ 16,000 people in forest products, and the sector produces 1.9 bn for the economy. Ireland is the largest provide of cross-border life insurance in the EU with 16.4bn in premiums in 2009 1.4 TRILLION euro in funds are administered from Ireland And we re competitive: 4th for labour productivity 3rd for flexibility and adaptability of peope 3rd for being open to new ideas 1st for real corporate taxes 1st for financial skills 1st for availability of skilled labour So we re not kidding when we say Ireland means business. SAMCO System on RTE's Ear to the Ground Feb 2015 The Samco company was established in Ireland in 1997 by Samuel Shine (the original inventor and patent holder of the Samco 3-in-1 machine). Samuel developed the machine to guarantee local farmers a crop of quality forage maize in a cool, less than favourable climate for maize corn growing. The Samco System involves the use of a 3-in-1 machine that sows Maize Corn Seed, sprays a pre-emergence herbicide on the soil and lays a thin layer of degradable mulch film over the soil, increasing air and ground temperature and protecting the young seedling from adverse weather and late frosts. The Samco System can be used in a range of climatic conditions depending on the customer’s requirements. http://www.samco.ie/ Samco is an Enterprise Ireland supported client company. www.enterprise-ireland.com
