Overview of the Irish Exporter to Germany Award 2012

The German-Irish Chamber of Industry and Commerce and Enterprise Ireland are pleased to announce a once off award to celebrate 50 years of Irish export success to Germany.  This award was kindly sponsored by DB Schenker.

The award will feature three categories:

  1. Irish Exporter to Germany
  2. Emerging Irish Exporter to Germany
  3. Best Irish company online presence in the German language

The award is designed to celebrate those companies which have pursued successful market entry or growth strategies and companies that are effectively using online media to capture a greater market share. Most of all, the award is designed to celebrate the individuals and management, in sales & marketing, innovation, and production, who have been behind their company's success – each making their contribution to securing jobs and creating employment in their own localities.

The award will offer an opportunity for a broader audience to gain insights into the ideas, lessons learnt and strategies taken which are enabling Irish companies to be export champions in Europe’s largest market and the fourth largest economy in the world.



In 1962, Ireland opened its first trade development office in Germany to support and boost Irish exports. At that time, 50 years ago, exports to (West) Germany were valued at a little over £5 million punts. Sewing machines accounted for almost one million of this, live cattle another million while medical and pharmaceutical products were valued at £126,000. It appears that most of Ireland’s exports were manufactured goods produced by German branch plants.

In 2011, overall exports from Ireland to Germany are valued at €14.2 billion (€6.5 billion in goods and €7.7 billion in services). Today’s exports reflect how much more sophisticated Ireland’s exports and exporters have become. Ireland’s SMEs export a range of products and services from respiratory devices to diagnostics, agricultural machinery to cleanroom equipment, complex software solutions behind the trading platforms of the German stock exchange to animated TV programmes for children and petfood treats for a nation of dog lovers. In a market known for its high standards, the best Irish companies are now able to successfully compete with German companies in their home market. This is certainly worth celebrating.


Award Categories

The three award categories are:

  1. Irish Exporter to Germany
  2. Emerging Irish Exporter to Germany
  3. Best Irish company online presence in the German language

You may find the following indicators useful when considering which category you should enter:

  1. Irish Exporter to Germany: Your company should have a strong track record in the German market over a sustained period of time (longer than three years), can demonstrate significant sales growth and have introduced innovation (either in product or delivery) to retain and grow market share.
  2. Emerging Irish Exporter to Germany: Your company is typically at an earlier stage of German market entry (three years or less) and can demonstrate a number of early successes, as well as the potential to grow into a very significant business in this market.
  3. Best Irish company online presence in the German language: Your company can demonstrate excellent localised content, a clear value proposition and creative social media techniques to grow your sales in the German market.


How do I apply?

This award is now closed to applications.

  • Companies, headquartered and controlled in Ireland, are eligible to apply.  Additionally companies should have achieved >€25,000 export revenues from the German market in their last full financial year.  Companies are allowed to nominate themselves, and any business can be nominated in more than one category.  We also encourage other companies to nominate businesses they have worked closely with.

How is my application evaluated?

Award recipients shall be selected by a jury that will be chaired by Patrick McGrath, CEO, Miele Ireland. 

Additional jury members include:

  • David Dempsey, President of the Irish Business Network in Germany and MD and Founder, Riverland It-Consulting GmbH
  • Deirdre McPartlin, Manager Germany, Austria and Switzerland, Enterprise Ireland
  • Joachim Schäfer, MD, Trade Fair Düsseldorf, Germany
  • John Hearne, CEO, Cúram Software, an IBM company
  • Holger Erdmann, Deputy CEO, German-Irish Chamber of Industry and Commerce

The following criteria will be taken into consideration for the awards:

  • Clear vision and strategy for the German market.
  • Growth in sales/profitability.
  • Growth in Irish-based employment.
  • Successful sales & marketing approach.
  • Key clients and/or projects won in the last 12 months (or nature of these projects).
  • Innovative solution (product or service) which provides a strong differentiator in the German market.
  • For the online presence award category, the company’s online presence and resulting impact on the business in Germany.

Nominees will represent a wide range of sectors of industry and trade.  The jury’s decision is final. 


Closing Date for Applications 

  • All applications must be received by Wednesday 17th October 2012. 
  • Application forms will be acknowledged within one working day.


Winners Announcement

Winners across three categories will be announced by Frank Ryan, CEO Enterprise Ireland, and Ralf Zimmermann, President German-Irish Chamber of Industry and Commerce and MD Bayer Ireland at an evening reception on 20th November 2012 in Enterprise Ireland’s Eastpoint offices in Dublin.
