The Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies, through the astronomy and astrophysics sections of the School of Cosmic Physics, has participated in almost all Irish space science research activities going back to a collaboration with the University of Berkley in NASA's Apollo programme. This lead to a collaboration with the European Space Agency's technology centre, ESTEC, to build a large passive experiment for NASA's Long Duration Exposure Facility mission.

More recently DIAS helped construct the digital electronics for the Irish EPONA experiment on the European GIOTTO mission to comet Halley, as well as related experiments on the Soviet PHOBOS mission to Mars and its moons, and has just completed work for the optical monitoring camera on the European INTEGRAL gamma-ray astronomy mission. In addition to this hardware involvement, the Institute has participated in software development for the Infrared Space Observatory mission and has participated scientifically in a number of other missions as well as ESA committees, most recently the working group on space weather.

Expertise:
General astronomy and space science, Analysis software, Digital electronics.
