Ireland and the European Space Agency
The European Space Agency, first established in 1975, currently has 15 Member
States and has a co-operation agreement with Canada. ESA programmes fall into two categories: mandatory programmes to which all Member States are required to participate according to their GNP; and optional programmes to which individual Member States may decide to contribute in line with their strategic interests.
The mandatory programmes include the ESA General Budget and the Science Programme. Optional programmes in which Ireland participates include:
Satellite Communications, (ARTES)
Satellite Navigation (GALILEO)
Space Transportation Programmes (Ariane V)
General Support Technology Programme (GSTP)
Space Science experiments (PRODEX)
European Life and Physical Sciences Programme (ELIPS)
Ireland contributes approximately €10 million to ESA annually. This contribution entitles Irish companies to bid for ESA contracts in programmes in which Ireland participates.
Enterprise Ireland, in association with the Office of Science and Technology of the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment, has been instrumental in developing the Irish space sector industry, by directing national space funding and providing technical and other support to participating companies.
Enterprise Ireland can provide a source of expertise for Irish companies in developing their space strategies as well as being a point of reference for international companies wishing to identify relevant sources of space-related expertise within Ireland.
