Sigma Wireless

5.2 The eBusiness Solution – technical details

5.2.1 Technical infrastructure

The technical infrastructure broke down into three main areas:

  • Internal Portal/ Databank
  • Public-Facing Web site
  • Restricted Access Workspace for clients/partners (customer extranet)

The planned sequencing of the development work was in line with the business driven sequence outlined in section 5.1

In developing the technology roadmap Sigma Wireless did not just pay attention to the technology components. They also looked at:

  • Operational requirements including both manpower and access
  • Financial implications, both immediate and ongoing
  • Technology competence within the organisation
  • Organisation and individual change requirements

Internal Portal (Databank)

The development of an Internal Portal was designed to support sales, engineering, marketing and logistics effort in order to support the new business model. This was by far the most important component of the technology roadmap as it would form the basis for the website as well. Specification, design and development of this project were undertaken immediately.

Public-Facing Web site

The main goal of the website was to inform visitors of Sigma’s product/solution offering and to provide sufficiently interesting content to move them from interest to action – making direct telephone or mail contact with a sales person to help ascertain their needs. The navigation structure of the website was to be driven by the structure and capabilities of the databank.

Customer Extranet

A customer extranet was planned to provide customer specific information relating to orders, customised solutions and collaboration areas. The idea was to create a restrictedaccess collaboration area to enable Sigma Wireless, its partners and customers to work more effectively together. It will incorporate access to documents and technical information, which would not be suitable for public consumption.
