QC Logistics

7 . Lessons Learnt

The team learnt a number of lessons in the development of its eBusiness system

  • Spend time on detailing the specification – The team put a lot of time and effort into specifying their requirements – this was a fundamental part of the process. Putting this specification together demands that you know your business very well.
  • Have a plan and involve everyone – It is imperative to have a plan outlining how to approach the project – this should be led by a Project Manager. It is also very important to involve the entire team from day one – these are the people that are hands on, day on day and know how the current system works and will operate the new system.
  • Stick to your timeline - People need to adhere to timelines and afford themselves the time to allow that to happen (attendance at review meetings, travelling to do research or meet potential partners etc.).
  • Research – In an ideal world (in which they weren’t also running a business), the team in QC would have sought advice on where to look for a wider selection of vendors. Given the chance, they may have looked at more vendors before making a decision on which to use.

8 . Future Plans

QC Logistics has very ambitious plans for the future. The main objective for the company in the coming years is to develop itself into a one-stop-shop for logistics and supply chain management through strategic partnerships. QC have identified a global 4PL player and a strategic partnership agreement is now in place and will roll out in the first quarter of 2003. The installation and subsequent company-wide rollout of IonData Lite will facilitate this greatly.

Other areas for future expansion include:

  • Integration – In order to gain maximum value from the eBusiness system implemented by QC Logistics, it will be imperative to integrate the other systems they are currently using on behalf of clients.
  • Client Extranet – Accessed via a password protected page on the QC web site, the extranet will allow direct access to stock inventory. As well as offering clients a way to get information on an as-needed basis – it will also realise a timesaving for QC. Less calls and emails requesting reports will free up staff in the company to undertake other duties.
  • Networking – The next stage of the roll-out of IonData Lite is to network the software around the organisation, both across and within sites.
