2.1 Company Background
Lotus Automation was incorporated in 1989 with a focus on the need
for a quality supplier of industrial automation products and services.
Since its inception the company has entered into partnership
agreements with a wide range of international suppliers. This has
enabled access to some of the world leaders in industrial automation.
Starting with an initial workforce of three, the company now employs
over 120 full-time members of staff. Lotuss workforce consists
of:
- Engineers
- Technicians
and
- Electricians.
A world-class
engineering firm Lotus Automation operates in the following areas
of business:
1. Industrial automation/systems integration
There is a general trend in manufacturing towards fully automated
or semi-automated processes and away from manual based systems. Some
of the benefits of this change are increased productivity, improved
quality and less downtime. Getting valuable production information
such as part counts, tool usage, down time logging and up to the minute
status reports from the machine to the office has been a stumbling
block for many manufacturing companies. Lotus Automation has helped
many clients overcome the PC to machine interface problems. They offer
a full office/production floor integrated package making production
data available to the Management Information System (MIS) for analysis
and planning.
2. Control Systems/Control Panel Manufacture
Lotus designs, manufactures, installs and commissions Control
Panels to customer requirements. All PLC (Programmable Logic Controller,
used to program control sequences for automatic machinery ) and operator
interface programming is done in-house by people with many years of
in-the-field experience. Applications range from upgrading of production
machinery to building panels for OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers).
Some of Lotuss larger customers include leading multinationals
in the microprocessor manufacturing industry, for which they manufacture
PLC panels, operator interface stations and remote I/O panels.
3. Contract Maintenance/Commissioning Services
Lotus offers a contract maintenance facility. They manage all
their clients industrial automation and instrumentation requirements.
Completely flexible in their approach to customers requirements,
they can calibrate single temperature controllers and at the other
end of the scale, they have tested major SCADA projects on behalf
of their clients. They also offer on-call services where production
critical cover is required.
4. Calibration Services
Lotus offers a calibration service for industrial instrumentation.
The companys test equipment is traceable to national standards
and can perform calibrations to comply with ISO 9001/FDA/DHSS requirements.
Lotuss Instrumentation Technicians are trained in temperature,
pressure, level and flow measurements as well as the analytical measurements
associated with water treatment such as pH, conductivity, turbidity
etc. They have extensive experience in clean-room facilities and the
measurements associated with the upkeep of clean-room validation.
5. Training Programmes
Lotus is a provider of Introductory and Advanced PLC Training
Courses on Mitsubishi, Omron and Siemens PLCs. They also offer
tailored hands-on, practical training courses on any aspect of instrumentation
and control or pneumatics to meet the clients specific requirements
delivered by trained and experienced field staff. Lotus is an approved
FAS Trainer, which means that participants on any of their courses
will be eligible for grant aid against course fees.
The company serves a number of blue chip, multinational clients
in the following sectors, at home and abroad:
- Healthcare/Pharmaceutical
- Semiconductor
- Industrial
Process
- Food
& Beverage
To
guarantee success Lotus Automation has to work across borders, cultures
and languages to offer their services. Those services are mission
critical to clients. Lotus offers a combination of technical expertise,
operational stability, flexibility and reliability to create and
maintain the standards demanded by clients. As a consequence Lotus
has found that clients have become their biggest promoters. Their
awards and endorsements have seen Lotus gaining new and repeat business
across their entire service portfolio at Start of case study and abroad. They have
also achieved ISO 9001 accreditation.
By the late 1990s Lotus had penetrated the US market.
This market has now become one of their most active. The new
millennium found their engineers operating on both sides of
the Atlantic. They had reached their goal of becoming a supplier
of a quality industrial automation service both at home and
to Fortune 500 companies around the world.
