Setbacks and difficulties
Most
of the setbacks and difficulties encountered by Kennys stemmed
from one key element staffing. In order to kick-off the project
and, indeed, sort out the current internal IT systems, it was imperative
that Kennys employ the right person. Unfortunately, it wasnt
until David Lohan joined the team that they were able to progress
properly. Additionally, and more importantly, it wasnt until

Firewall
|
| A
firewall is a set of related programs, located at a network
gateway server that protects the resources of a private network
from users from other networks. (The term also implies the security
policy that is used with the programs.) An enterprise with an
intranet that allows its workers access to the wider Internet installs a firewall to prevent outsiders from accessing its
own private data resources and for controlling what outside
resources its own users have access to. |
David
joined that the organisation realised the need for the assistance
of an external consultant. As outlined earlier, the feeling is that
Kennys would have seen a threefold return on its investment
of €200,000 already, had they have employed BSM from the outset.
5.5 Budget
At this time, it is likely that Kennys will overspend the
original budget as laid out in its application for funding under
the Enterprise Ireland eBusiness Accelerator Fund. When preparing
the application, it was felt by the management team that the budget
quoted was likely to be less than would be required. Like many projects
of this size, its not until the project has been scoped out
that the company is able to identify the exact costs of each of
the elements.
When the project started back at the beginning of 2000, there were
so many vendors offering solutions that the potential costs vary
wildly as did the quality of deliverables. Prices quoted
ranged from €25,300 (Kennys was told that it would be
no more than this) to €380,000 (in this case, this would only
be the beginning)!
Now that the company has narrowed potential vendors down to two,
Kennys expects the bill to be somewhere between €220,000
and €320,000. The exact figure will depend on hardware required
and the amount of integration that will be needed - this will be
agreed as negotiations progress with the successful vendor.
