Development Ltd
6.3.
Outcome
To date IDL have secured an impressive list of 25 clients in Ireland, including,
Superquinn, Centra, Spar, Esso, Statoil, Easons and Londis. This ongoing
growth would have only been possible with the investment made in people
and e-business systems to support the increasing production capacity. Managing
multiple contracts, with production on several continents is now possible.
Finely tuned specifications are delivered electronically to all manufacturers
with clear instructions the scope for error has been made negligible.
All production procedures are clear and precise and any discrepancies can
be quickly monitored and dealt with.
6.3.1. Benefits
The project has allowed the company to climb to the
next level of business the whole company has
moved up a gear. It is now in a position to fight for
more contracts in the market place. It has secured an
ability to compete with those UK manufacturers looking
to move into the Irish market. With the systems in place,
the company has the ability to control complex volume
production for several clients at one time and bolt
on more manufacturing capacity as needs require.
6.4. Lessons learnt and advice for other companies
The IT Manager managed this whole project from conception to rollout. His
advice to anyone embarking on a similar journey is:
- Do
your homework. Without the web manager course offered
by Enterprise Ireland, I would have ended up paying
out far more than necessary to build these systems;
- Draw
up a detailed project plan, looking at all you are
trying to achieve and the specifics of how you are
going to get there. It might be laborious and painful,
but the process will save you time and money in
the long run;
- Plan
for reasonable timescales. Plan in time for unexpected
delays and remember you need to allocate time to
run such a project in addition to your normal business
operations.
6.5.
Future Plans
IDL will be considering upgrading their internal networks
and improving external hook ups with their hosted web
service. They are awaiting the rollout of Irelands
ADSL broadband service by Eircom in the immediate future.
