6 . Outcome

6.1 Benefits for Customers

Benefits to customers were immediate, removing much of the delay they experienced in receiving information when the manual process was in place.

The major benefits are summarised below:

  • Accessibility - Clients had immediate, online, repeatable, reliable access to the information held by BGT, reducing the amount of time they spent waiting for the information.
  • Self-Service - iView was designed to be ‘self service’, available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year – the data was always there and users could access it whenever they needed it.
  • Available Globally – BGT produced work for clients across a number of geographies (i.e. a project for a US customer may have been fulfilled in Singapore, Ireland and the US west coast). Global access removed the issues and delays caused by time differences.
  • Developed to meet customer requirements – During the requirements gathering process, all parties were consulted on what they felt would add value to the current process. Thus, when the system was rolled out, early involvement in its development meant that users were very receptive.

6.2 Benefits for BGT

There have been many benefits for BGT in implementing this project. One of the less measurable benefits is the way iView adds to the image of the organisation. The introduction of this system is seen as being a real valueadd service by BGT’s clients, making the organisation appear more capable and more efficient.

  • Investing in infrastructure – BGT made a substantial investment, in both time and budget, to design and build a solid back-end infrastructure for the iView system. Adding new users or reports will, in the future, leverage that infrastructure – there won’t be the same investment to add another 50 reports (variable cost) or 700 users as there was to add the first 50 reports and 700 users.
  • Develop and deploy once – Because iView was designed with an Internet front-end, reports and other functionality only have to be developed once as they can then be shared with all users via the standard user interface. In the long term, this architecture will realise savings for the company in both budget and resources.
  • Self service – Due to the fact that users now generate their own reports, the resources that used to develop reports manually can now be redeployed to other positions within the company where they will be able to add an increased level of value to the actual process.
  • Cost of infrastructure - The cost of implementing a web-based system is far cheaper than implementing an EDI–VAN solution. Web infrastructure also means that the system is immediately accessible to a far greater number of users and can therefore be rolled out very quickly.
  • Raises visibility of processes - Rather than each member of the supply chain being removed from all the others, each party would have visibility across the supply chain, allowing them to see process from start to finish.
  • Increased reaction time – iView speeds up reaction time to changing demands from clients to BGT or, likewise, from BGT to supplier.
