The Internet is also an excellent source for practical business information as well as competitive intelligence For example, there are a number of websites that provide valuable information for locating sales prospects. Some are free, some require registration before allowing access, some require you to pay an annual subscription and some require you to pay on a document basis.

Hoovers Gain access to more than $100 billion worth of qualified sales leads. Use our database that features new business incorporations, RFPs/RFQs, emerging businesses, and many other selling opportunities plus sales intelligence. You can locate prospects by company type, size, SIC code, city, state, zip code, or a combination of factors.
Harris Info Source Allows you to sort more than 360,000 manufacturers by industry, city, state, SIC code, and zip code.
InfoSpace Provides a wide variety of resources for locating businesses, people, email addresses, news, and travel information. InfoSpace also offers a Reverse Lookup search engine that returns a name and address from a phone or fax number in the USA.
SuperPages Provides an extensive database of over 16 million U.S. business listing.
Irish Public SectorProcurement Portal As part of the Irish Government Action Plan Implementing the Information Society in Ireland the Department of Finance are in the process of developing a national strategy for e-procurement that will meet the requirements of both the public sector and associated suppliers. A Public Sector Procurement Portal has been developed as an interim measure for the publication of all public sector procurement opportunities.

There are also a number of websites that provide valuable legal intelligence. The following is a list of websites that provide searchable databases of patents and copyright information.

The Copyright Website Copyright information for digital, visual and audio documents.
Espacenet Patent applications in their original language or with an English abstract.
Patent Explorer Derwent's searchable site of U.S. and European patents. A fee-based system with an easy-to-use interface, offering a mix of granted patents, applications and full text abstracts.
Patent Search System STO's Internet Patent Search System. Provides keyword searchable classification index, international patent information retrieval, patent news service, and links to commercial services. Free membership but fee-based research.
The Intellectual Property Network This subscription site features an intuitive interface and offers access to patent documents from the U.S., Europe and Japan, plus patent applications from the World Intellectual Property Office. You can register for a one day free trial and/or subscribe to the service.
