Background
The World Economic Forum report 2006/2007 on Global Competitiveness, covering 120 countries, placed Australia at 19th, Ireland at 21st and New Zealand at 23rd. While Australia and New Zealand earn most of their foreign income from commodities and agricultural produce, both are striving, like Ireland to move up the knowledge curve, with significant programmes of R&D and innovation.
The Economist Intelligence Unit forecasts continued strong GDP growth in both countries through to 2008, with Australia expected to show 3.3% in 2007 and 3.1% in 2008. New Zealand should grow 1.8% in 2007 and over 3% in 2008.
In recent years business links between Ireland and Australia and New Zealand have broadened out from merchandise trade in manufactured goods, to include direct investments, financial and business services, tourism services and real estate. In addition to sharing a common language, Ireland/Australia/New Zealand have similar financial, accounting and legal systems. While doing business in Ireland is fairly straightforward, it is even simpler and quicker in Australia and New Zealand.
