Greyhound Recycling & Recovery Ltd., a major player in the Waste Management Industry, has recently diversified its interests to become one of the leading producers of Bio-Diesel from waste cooking oils.

Through Enterprise Ireland’s TechSearch service, Greyhound embarked on a “Best Practice” Technology Search and located expertise in Germany and N. Ireland. Forming technology partnership agreements with Petrotec in Germany, and the Questor Centre in N.Ireland, Greyhound were able to “fast-track” the development of their Bio-Diesel production facility located in Trim, Co Meath. Annual production now exceeds 500,000 litres.

The technology acquisition practice now works both ways, in terms of license-in, and license-out. A new facility has now been installed at Greyhound’s Waste Management facility at Suzshou city in China. A scaled-up version of the Trim plant is now operational at Suzshou, and this has the capacity to produce 20 million litres/year.

Commenting on the success of the business development strategy, Brian Buckley of Greyhound said that the future for technology acquisition in this sector is very promising, and that Enterprise Ireland’s involvement in key EU networks such as the Innovation Relay Centre, provides Irish companies with excellent opportunities for sustained growth through Technology Transfer.

He said that there were increasing demands for better technologies for separation and sorting, and for biochemical treatment, and that these technologies had great potential for Irish waste management companies.
