Enterprise Ireland is the State agency responsible for commercialising the substantial investment of public funds in academic research. Our experience shows that the most effective way to convert the research into economic benefit is to collaborate with experienced entrepreneurs. This is the essence of our Business Partners Programme.
In 2009, 35 new companies emerged from State-funded research in Higher Education Institutions and Enterprise Ireland is working hard to substantially increase this number in 2010. Through the Business Partners Programme, we are seeking to engage and support entrepreneurs to capitalise on this rich portfolio of research and create start up companies.
The 2009 pilot programme was very successful, engaging a number of entrepreneurs who immediately set about transforming third level research into new start up companies.
What type of people can become Business Partners?
Enterprise Ireland wants to work with individuals (not companies) who can demonstrate strong commercial experience and the ability to lead a venture. After identifying specific opportunities, we will work closely with these individuals over a six month period to produce start-up companies.
The ideal Business Partner will have the following:
- a strong commercial track record
- excellent business credentials
- capacity to invest
- ability to identify commercial opportunity
- time to invest in the creation of a new company
- vision to transform new technologies into solid businesses
- ability to articulate strategy, motivate, lead and inspire others
- established links and relevant industry contacts and a potential network in one of the technology sectors we fund.
What's on offer for Business Partners?
- access to State-funded research with commercial potential.
- participation in the Business Partners Network, including monthly events focusing on key aspects of the programme.
- once a project is agreed, a grant of €20,000 is available to cover a portion of the costs of developing the associated commercial opportunities.
- the support of an Enterprise Ireland specialist in the commercialisation of publicly-funded research throughout the 6 months engagement.
- full support from Enterprise Ireland's Information Centre team and where appropriate, other functions with Enterprise Ireland.
