Applied Research Enhancement (ARE) Programme

The Applied Research Enhancement Programme (ARE) is not accepting any new Expressions of Interest for new starts until further notice.

The Applied Research Enhancement (ARE) programme is supported by Enterprise Ireland and the National Development Plan. Since the programme commenced in 2005, 17 applied research enhancement centres in 11 Institutes of Technology have been funded with seed funding in order of €1.25 to €2.0 million for a 3 to 5 year period. This results in a total financial commitment of approximately €29.7 million to date. This seed funding provides for procurement of a dedicated core research team led by an industrial experienced Centre Manager, dedicated lab space and provision of specialised equipment.

The objectives of these centres are

  • To enable regional development by introducing innovative technological solutions through collaboration with industrial partners
  • To develop the next generation technology platforms for the benefit of Irish based industry through a dedicated applied research strategy

The centres can be divided into 3 technology clusters

  • ICT & Software
  • Bio Life Sciences & Pharmaceutical
  • Bio-Medical Devices & Materials

Details of the 13 ARE centres that are currently open and their contact details can be found by clicking on the ARE Centre Contact List link.
