SESAR and the North European ATM Industry Initiative

On Friday the 21st September a meeting of the North Atlantic Air Traffic Management (ATM) Industry Group organised by the FP7 National Support office was held in the offices of Enterprise Ireland in Glasnevin. This aim of the meeting was to discuss potential Irish participation in the SESAR Joint Undertaking as part of a North Atlantic alliance consisting of industries and academia from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Estonia and Ireland.

The meeting was attended by several Irish companies with an interest in ATM technology as well as representatives from the Irish Aviation Authority, the Dublin Aviation Authority, Enterprise Ireland, the Norwegian Embassy and academia. Also present at the meeting representing the North Atlantic ATM Industry group was represented Mr Aage J. Thunem, Executive Vice President SINTEF ICT and chairman of ATM Forum Norway and Mr Hans Erik Swendgaard, business adviser SINTEF and coordinator technology in North European ATM Group.

The SESAR project (formerly known as SESAME) is the European air traffic control infrastructure modernisation programme. SESAR aims at developing the next generation air traffic management system in order to improve and reinforce safety, to restructure European airspace to accommodate air traffic flow, to create additional capacity and to increase the overall efficiency of the air traffic management system. It is a Public Private Partnership funded in part by the European commission through the Framework 7 Programme, Eurocontrol and Industry.
