It is important to remember the following when selecting export markets:
- Concentrate on a few markets, do not spend time examining several at once.
- Do not overlook some of the similar markets. Competition may be less formidable than in the larger markets.
- Choose a market where there is enough potential to justify your efforts.
- Choose a market where your product will have some competitive advantage (design, price, performance, quality).
- Plan to spend time and money visiting the market before you commit your company to exports. These visits will help you to understand the practical problems that can arise.
- Stay away from markets in which import restrictions or exchange controls will restrict your scope.
- Be sure that you can handle business promptly before you accept your first order.
- Make full use of Enterprise Ireland's services and seek advice from other sources.
