Introduction
Enterprise Ireland is hosting a workshop that will focus on the practical experiences of companies, both small and large, in developing telecoms standards.
Issues to be covered include:
- Making the decision on whether to participate in a standards body
- Why get involved?
- The level of commitment and participation required
- Working your way up to achieve standards leadership
- Tactics - lobbying, bargaining, doing a deal
- What is involved in chairing a group
- Patents and standards
Who should attend?
The workshop is targeted at:
- Companies who want to explore the value of engaging in standards development work
- Companies already engaged in standards development who are interested in deepening their involvement and improving their commercialisation of the standards work
- Companies interested in participating in an Irish standards forum. The forum would share know-how on getting the most from standards participation and getting into a driving position as well as disseminate information gained on technology developments
- The workshop will also be useful to academic Institutions and government bodies with an interest in standardisation.
Workshop Programme
Peter Lonergan, NSAI/ICT Standards Consultative Committee/SC 3 Telecommunications Convener, will place the work on international standards and specifications in the context of the role of National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI), for example in forming a national position. To view biography
Michael Truss, Product Manager, IBM-Vallent , formerly a distinguished Member of Technical Staff at Motorola. Michael has a strong track record of leadership in international standardization with 3GPP (Third Generation Partnership Project), ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) and TMF (TeleManagement Forum), with particular emphasis on Network Management Standards. His presentation will look at the value of standards on the world telecoms stage as well as the commitment required to get to a leadership position. It will also examine strategies and tactics to be used in achieving the desired end result with a standard.
There will be presentations from a number of the companies who were successful in the Enterprise Ireland Wireless Standards Programme, sharing their experiences of what has worked best for them in the standards world.
Rotan Hanrahan, Chief Innovations Architect, Mobileaware, Chair, Device Description Working Group, W3C (World Wide Web Consortium). Rotan will speak about what it takes for an SME to get to a driving position in the standards process and how the standardisation work can be harnessed for commercial success. He will talk about what it takes to successfully chair an international standards group as well as the by-products of participation: early-warning, commercial liaison and strategic influence. Brian Kelly, Chief Technology Officer, Openmind Networks. Brian will speak about what it takes for an SME to move quickly from starting into a position of influence and what it takes to convert standards activity to sales. To view biography
John Maguire, General Manager Consumer Mobile, S3. John will describe the lessons learned in how to maximise impact at standards meetings. He will also provide a non-legal person's perspective on some of the legal issues around new standards. To view biography
