Biotechnology
Biotechnology is an important and growing sector in Denmark and Finland. The biotechnology industry is one of the most promising high-technology sectors. The areas of greatest strength are pharmaceuticals, biomaterials, diagnostics and industrial enzymes.
Life Sciences & Pharmaceutical Sector
Medicon Valley located in the Øresund region, encompasses Copenhagen on the Danish side and Skåne on the Swedish side. It is one of the largest medical and biotechnological growth centres in Europe and home to more than 60% of Scandinavia's pharmaceutical industry. Medicon Valley has a large concentration of medico and bio-tech companies. On a per capita basis, Denmark is No.1 in medical device production, No. 2 when it comes to R&D spending in the pharmaceutical industry and Europe's No. 3 in pharmaceutical product exports.
Timber-Wood Pulp Sector
Current markets for Irish timber are the construction industry, panel board manufacture, pallet production and fencing. Finland has the biggest saw-mill industry in Europe, they are the third largest pulp and paper exporter in the world.
Environmental Engineering Sector
Demand for new and sophisticated high tech products and services continues to grow in Denmark and Finland. These countries are leaders in environmental technology. This offers considerable scope for Irish companies with their own expertise in this area.
Optoelectronics & Nanotechnology Sector
